myMurdoch ADVICE - a message from the Pro Vice Chancellor (Education)

Dear Colleagues,

As we move into the first semester, I’d like to clarify Murdoch’s new approach and provide a recap of the services provided by the Student Success Advisors at the myMurdoch Advice Locations now in operation across four locations on the Perth and Mandurah campuses.

I would ask that we continue to work in partnership to ensure students receive the best possible experience as we go through the inevitable teething problems. The intention of the myMurdoch ADVICE locations is to increase the hours of support and broaden the range of support options available to all Murdoch students.

The statistics over the initial weeks of operation reveal that the vast majority of inquiries (over 1000 so far) are being resolved as expected and that international students are making strong use of the service. Unsurprisingly, the first few weeks demonstrate that enrolment advice is the most prominent advice type, with general advice and directions to Murdoch locations also featuring strongly. A data summary with more detail is included at the end of this communication for your information.

To recap, the following details what students can expect from Student Success Advisors at MyMurdoch ADVICE locations, what is referred to Academic Chairs and to other academic services and how you can contact the MyMurdoch ADVICE staff.

Student Success Advisors

Student Success Advisors can assist and advise all students by:

  • Encouraging students to self-help and to develop a sense of resourcefulness.
  • Answering and troubleshooting general queries e.g. how to sign up for classes, how to work through a timetable clash.
  • Providing base level course advice (i.e. helping to interpret the information provided in the Handbook).
  • Advising on how to transfer between courses or take an intermission.
  • Assisting students with administrative processes relating to their studies.
  • Unpicking intersectional issues impacting academic progress and student wellbeing.

Student Success Advisors can advise international students on general queries such as:

  • The eligibility criteria for a Reduced Study Load and how to apply.
  • The process for applying for a Confirmation of Enrolment renewal.

Student Success Advisors will refer students to Academic Chairs for:

  • In-depth course planning issues due to advanced standing, outdated course structures/units, unusual combinations of majors/co-majors/minors, inconsistent academic progress, etc.
  • When no course plan is available in the Handbook.
  • Detailed discipline-specific advice. E.g. accreditation/registration terms & conditions for professional degrees, suggested specified electives (as suited to career goals, academic progression and other needs), recommended order of units considering prerequisite knowledge and workload, etc.

Student Success Advisors will refer students to:
