COVID-19 Update: 28 January 2022

Published: 28th January 2022

Further to communications last year about requirements for certain staff and students to receive government-mandated COVID-19 vaccinations to fulfil their roles and undertake work placements, there have been further announcements and changes to State and Federal Government health and vaccination guidance

It is important you take the opportunity to understand what this means. At the outset, it is important to note:

  • Being fully vaccinated (including a third dose) is a requirement of the job for many people. For those for whom it is not a requirement, it makes sense to be vaccinated for your own health, as well as to protect those around you, particularly those who are vulnerable.
  • If you have not already, get vaccinated as soon as you can and get your third dose as soon as you become eligible.

Boosters

The State Government has mandated a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine (booster shot) is required for all workers who were included in its original mandate.

All staff and students who have previously been required to be vaccinated as a result of the State Government mandates are now required to access a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, unless exempt.

Workers captured under the mandatory vaccination directions, who were eligible to receive a booster dose at or before 4 January 2022, must receive their booster dose by 5 February 2022.

After 4 January 2022, as workers who are captured under the State Government’s mandatory vaccination directions become eligible to receive a booster dose, they must do so within one calendar month of becoming eligible.

The table below sets out the dates by which the booster is required to have been administered for affected workers.

What next?

Unit coordinators will be in touch via email/LMS with students who are required to be vaccinated in order to continue their studies/work placements.

Cafes and gyms

The Government has previously announced that, from 31 January 2022, double dose proof of vaccination for those aged 16 and older will be required for all hospitality venues including restaurants, cafes and taverns and gyms and fitness centres.

Accordingly, you will be required to show proof of vaccination if entering the Student Hub, Murdoch Tavern, Sir Walters Café and the Murdoch University Gym, among other such venues. Please be respectful to staff who ask for proof of vaccination – they are doing their job and adhering to the government directions.

Other information

If you have any concerns, we recommend you seek advice from your medical practitioner, or the COVID-19 vaccination experts at the Health Department. The page below contains all the details you need to reach out to them to clarify the requirements that match your personal circumstances.

It is also important to maintain good hygiene standards and to not be complacent – continue to scan the QR codes where required and follow government health advice on COVID-19 testing, vaccinations and staying home if feeling unwell.

We know this information can be confusing and sometimes overwhelming and that is why it is important to seek the advice of experts.

Please continue to look after yourselves and one another mentally and physically, and by all means take the opportunity to seek support through the Murdoch University Counselling Service if you need to.
