International Transgender Awareness Day

Published: 29th March 2022

31 March is International Transgender Day of Visibility, a day to raise awareness, celebrate trans pride, and recognize the experiences and achievements of trans and gender diverse people within our community.

Trans Rights are Human Rights pic

This Thursday, all Murdoch students and staff are invited to make your own pronoun pin in support of our trans and gender diverse community.  Come to the market day stalls, between 11am-2pm and bring a gold coin donation for your pronoun pin. Proceeds from each pin will be donated to Trans Folk of WA.

Understanding Pronouns

Pronouns are words used to refer to people when they are not using their name. For example, she/her, he/his, they/them. Using pronouns correctly to refer to a person promotes inclusivity and can be one of the easiest ways to show people respect and help them to affirm themselves.

Making your pronouns visible through simple acts, like wearing pronoun pins and including pronouns in your e-signature, can be small but powerful acts of allyship. It promotes the act of asking instead of presuming people’s preferred pronouns. It’s also a visible sign to the trans and gender diverse community that you understand and support your trans and gender diverse friends, teachers and colleagues.

Supporting our trans and gender diverse Murdoch community

All Gender toilets

Bathrooms are essential spaces that should meet the needs of all who use them. Plans are in place to include ‘All Gender’ toilets on each floor of the new Building 360.

‘All Gender’ options are crucial for non-binary and transgender people who may face health problems by holding on or not drinking enough due to long distances to access a suitable toilet .

Use Murdoch Maps to finds where (unisex) toilets are currently located on campus.

Diversity and Inclusivity sporting guidelines

Guidelines are currently being developed to improve diversity and inclusion in sport for non-binary, trans and gender-diverse students and staff wishing to compete in sport representing the University.

Pride Month

In 2021 we raised our new Progress Pride flag. This flag incorporates trans colours and draws attention to issues that LGBTIQA+ people of colour face, demonstrating the intersecting identities of the queer community. We hope to build on this and keep the momentum going for Pride Month 2022!
