Men’s Health Week

Published: 9th June 2022

From 13 to 19 June, we celebrate Men's Health Week to raise awareness about the importance of men’s health and share support and resources for the health and wellbeing of men and boys in our community.

Physical, mental and emotional wellbeing are all part of taking care of our health, and Men’s Health Week focuses on highlighting this to show support and provide proactive opportunities to learn.

This year, the theme for Men's Health Week is Building Healthy Environments for Men and Boys. What does this mean? Well, it brings attention to the importance of creating physically, mentally and emotionally healthy environments at home, at work and in social situations.

Why is this important?

If we look at statistics behind men’s health, we can easily see why it's important. On average, men live 4.4 years less than women, are more likely to die from heart disease at earlier ages and globally alcohol kills men almost six times more than women. Inactive men are also 60% more likely to have depression than those who are active.

The top three causes of death for men are:

  1. cardiovascular disease
  2. suicide
  3. motor vehicle accidents

‘Men have a tendency not to go the doctors unless they really must. We encourage younger men to come along to see the doctor for a health check, which might be to check a skin mole, or any new lumps or bumps, or to discuss anxiety and mood problems. It is generally better to address things early with the doctor rather than leaving them to build into a bigger issue.’ - Dr Peter Burke, MU Medical Service
