Email Protection with MS Defender

Published: 11th October 2022

To enhance the protection of Murdoch University’s email system we have made some changes that may impact your student emails, including:

Email Protection 630x380
  • More emails going into your Junk folder. This will require you to check your Junk Folder more often to retrieve any emails you require. Files attachments that often pose a threat (e.g., bat, .exe, .reg) will be blocked by the system.
  • Advice that you are receiving an email from a non-regular communicator. When Outlook receives an email from an infrequent sender, or a new sender, it will display advice stating, “You don’t often get email from this sender”. Being aware of who is sending you emails will assist in keeping your computer and mail box secure.
  • Advice that links are guarded by the Safelinks protection rules. Whenever you click on a link or attachment from an email in your inbox, or from a post in MS Teams, the system will scan the link or the attachment to determine if it is safe. If it is a link, you will see the messaging in your browser as the requested link is in the process of opening.
  • The Data Loss Prevention feature will display an alert prompt when a user enters potentially sensitive information into an email. This includes Credit Card and Bank Account numbers, Tax File numbers etc.

Here is an example of a message that may be displayed.
