COVID-19 Update: 20 October 2022

Published: 20th October 2022

On 30 September 2022, National Cabinet agreed to implement a nationally consistent approach to easing Australia’s COVID-19 response measures. This means that, from 14 October 2022, the COVID-19 Transition (Testing and Isolation) Directions are revoked. This removes mandatory requirements for isolation, testing and mask wearing for cases and contacts.

COVID Hygiene 630x380

As a science informed University, we know COVID-19 remains a risk to our health and wellbeing, particularly to those vulnerable to respiratory illness.

So, it is very important for everyone to take personal responsibility to keep themselves and those around them safe.

COVID-19 is still in the community

It is important to stay home if you have cold or flu symptoms (runny nose, sore throat, cough, fever). If you have these symptoms, get tested for COVID-19 as soon as possible.

If you test positive to COVID-19, you are strongly encouraged to continue to:

  • Not attend campus until you are no longer symptomatic.
  • Tell your household members and close contacts you have tested positive for COVID-19.
  • Report it to Murdoch University.
  • Report your positive RAT result to the WA Government.

Please also continue to practice healthy hygiene habits, including:

  • Washing and sanitising your hands regularly.
  • Wearing masks where necessary – while wearing masks is not compulsory, you are encouraged to wear masks at any time for your own protection if you wish to.
  • Testing for COVID-19 if you experience any symptoms. If you test positive, you are encouraged to not attend campus until you are not symptomatic.
  • Staying up to date with vaccinations.

If you have had close contact with someone who has COVID-19, please make sure you take steps to reduce the risk to others:

  • Monitor for COVID-19 like symptoms. If you get sick, get tested and stay home. Even if you test negative to COVID-19, you are encouraged to stay home until you are no longer symptomatic to prevent the spread of infection.
  • Don’t visit people at high risk of severe illness for seven days.
  • Wear a mask when indoors and on public transport.

Support on campus

All students and staff are to be commended for being vigilant throughout the period when COVID-19 has impacted the community, and taking the necessary actions to prevent and minimise the spread of COVID-19.

It is important to remain vigilant and adhere to safety protocols, knowing COVID-19 is still in the community and can be very dangerous for some people.

If you feel unwell do not come to campus – stay home and get tested.

Should you test positive for COVID-19, it is important you let your unit coordinator know as soon as possible and complete the COVID-19 Case Report Form. They will work with you to develop an alternate plan to ensure you are able to complete your studies.

Free rapid antigen tests (RATs) still available

RATs are a quick and convenient way to detect COVID-19. Students at Murdoch University will have access to 20 free nasal swab RATs, you can collect them at Café Kadjininy, The Tavern or Sir Walter's Mandurah. Find out more.
