Welcoming Students from Tokyo City University

Published: 24th January 2023

For Semester 1 2023, we are recruiting students currently enrolled at Murdoch University to become volunteer buddies.

Volunteer buddies - TCU

In the third week of February, we are expecting to welcome 103 Tokyo City University (TCU) students to Murdoch as part of the Tokyo-Australia Program (TAP). The TCU students will live at Murdoch Village and attend classes over 14 weeks on campus, including 7 weeks of intensive English followed by 6 weeks of liberal arts study.

We're looking for current Murdoch students to volunteer in the Buddy Program to help the students from TCU explore Murdoch and meet new people.

What does a Volunteer Buddy do?

As a TCU Volunteer Buddy, you will:

  • Be matched up with a small group of TCU students and assist them to find their way around Murdoch and life in Perth.
  • Get to meet and connect with, not only students from TCU, but a lot of other Murdoch students participating in the Buddy Program.
  • Have opportunities to develop and participate in fun activities that encourage interaction and exploration of life in Australia.

What do I need to do to become a Volunteer Buddy?

As a TCU Volunteer Buddy, you will:

  • Need to participate in a two-hour training session before the TCU students arrive at Murdoch.
  • Be encouraged to participate in activities over the TCU students orientation Feb 16 -17.

To sign up to be a TCU TAP Volunteer Buddy, please register by 30 January, 2023.

What will I gain from this opportunity?

On a professional level, as a TCU Volunteer Buddy you will have an opportunity to develop:

  • Skills for future employment, including teambuilding, planning, organisation and leadership skills.
  • Interpersonal communication skills.
  • Cultural awareness competence.

You will also:

  • Be able to include your Buddy volunteer hours towards a MU Volunteering and Employment Transcript.
  • Receive a certificate/letter of acknowledgment from the Pro Vice Chancellor International acknowledging your contribution to TAP and Murdoch University
