Earth Hour 2023

Published: 14th March 2023

On Thursday, 23 March we are calling on students and staff to switch off from 12-1pm.

Earth hour 2023 630x380

Join a worldwide community of millions* taking #TimeOutForNature. Whether it’s 60 seconds, 60 minutes or beyond the hour, it’s time to reflect on the incredible benefits nature provides and consider how we can create a better future for people and the planet.

Our South Street campus is situated within a beautiful natural environment. If you are here on the day, we invite you to step outside and reconnect with nature – head to your favourite lunch spot, come play lawn games on Bush Court, or organise lunch with your peers.

There will also be acoustic tunes and activities for all on Bush Court, including:

  • Free bike safety check and simple maintenance service – bring your bike for a little TLC. Registrations are essential.
  • Quality second-hand bikes for sale.
  • A solar oven demonstration – pop past for a solar baked treat.
  • Get up close and personal with a Forest Red tailed Black Cockatoo from the Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Rehabilitation Centre from 11:30am-1:30pm.

If you are not able to make it, you can still take part and support Earth Hour by turning off your lights, computers, printers, and other devices at the wall.

We will be measuring the University’s electricity consumption before, during and after the event. To show how our collective actions on the day helped to conserve energy, we will be updating this article with those figures.

*Global Earth Hour is Saturday, 25 March from 8:30-9:30pm.
