The theme of Men's Health Week 2023 is Healthy Habits - focusing on encouraging men and boys to build healthy habits by identifying small changes they can make that benefit their health and wellbeing. Healthy lifestyle choices play a vital role in maintaining overall wellbeing. Men's Health Week encourages men to engage in physical activities they enjoy, adopt a nutritious diet, and prioritize sufficient rest. If these are things you would like to focus on or would like some help on how to more effectively choose these healthy habits, the Murdoch Medical Service offers free bespoke Healthy Lifestyle Consults with our nurses that can focus on diet, exercise, or sleep habits.
Physical health
Men's Health Week emphasises the need for regular health check-ups and screenings. Many diseases, such as prostate cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes, can often be managed effectively if detected early. Having routine check-ups can help identify potential health risks and enable timely interventions.
A simple action could be to?make an appointment?to see your regular healthcare provider for a general check-in and healthy lifestyle consult. If you don’t have a regular healthcare provider, the Murdoch Medical Service is a great place to start, and appointments with the doctor are completely bulk billed through Medicare or your overseas health cover and there is no fee to see the nurse.
Murdoch Active continues to offer a student free time membership to the gym from Monday to Friday 9am – 11am and 1pm – 3pm. In addition, the Murdoch Moves group fitness classes are always free for students to attend and offer a morning and afternoon option to get active (available all year). This Men’s Health Week, Murdoch Active are discounting basic fitness appraisals to $15. Each appraisal will come with a gym program designed to meet the person’s current fitness and aspirational health and wellbeing goals.

Mental health and wellbeing
Men's Health Week recognises the importance of addressing mental health issues and creating supportive environments where men can feel comfortable discussing their health concerns. Men may face unique challenges in seeking help due to social stigma or societal expectations of masculinity. Promoting open conversations about mental health and encouraging men to seek support when needed is crucial.
Let’s check in with men of all ages in our life, our friends, partners, family and colleagues, and make ‘man time’.?If you're struggling with your mental health, Murdoch students can access?our counselling service?for free, just call on 9360 1227 or stop into our office in?building 440?to book an initial appointment. Reaching out for support is a sign of strength.
Physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing are all part of taking care of our health, and Men’s Health Week focuses on highlighting this to show support and provide proactive opportunities to learn. By addressing the unique challenges faced by men in maintaining good health, we can make significant strides in preventing diseases, improving mental health, and fostering healthier lifestyles.
