R U OK? Day

Published: 8th September 2023

We all have what it takes to ask, listen and support one another. But checking in with others, even a close friend, can sometimes feel like a daunting task.

Now in its 14th year, the mission of the R U OK? Day campaign remains the same: to equip all Australians with the resources and confidence to navigate a conversation with someone who might be struggling.

People familiar with R U OK? Day are up to six times more likely to find the right time and place to check in on a friend, relative, or colleague about how they’re feeling, compared to those not exposed to the campaign.

This year, R U OK? Day is on Thursday, 14 September.

Several splashes of yellow around campus will mark activities available to students and staff to increase awareness about mental health and encourage people to reach out to their mates.

From 12pm, the Murdoch University Counselling Team is hosting a free workshop in The Den to share tips for asking if someone is ok, and importantly, what to do if they say no.

On Bush Court as part of Market Daze, the Access, Wellbeing and Equity team will have a bright yellow spinning wheel with prizes for people who are willing to share what they know (or are willing to learn) about mental health and self-care. The guild will be hosting a free DIY friendship bracelet stall at Murdoch Markets to provide students with the space to sit down, enjoy a fun activity with their friends and check-in with each other.

As always, the Den’s crafternoons will run throughout the week with a special R U OK? Day theme and the Mandurah campus will showcase multi-lingual signage asking visitors if they’re ok.
