Deaf Awareness Training

Access and Inclusion are developing a calendar of engaging and informative training workshops for the coming year that focus on supporting and promoting an inclusive and accessible university experience for our students.

Deaf Awareness Training 630x380

This semester, we will be hosting Deaf Awareness Training which will include tailored content for communicating with students who are Deaf or hard of hearing in the tertiary context. The session is delivered in AUSLAN with an AUSLAN interpreter. If you are interested but cannot attend the March session there will be a second training held on 14 August 2024 from 2-4pm.

Workshop description

This workshop will:

  • Provide tips on how to communicate through a sign language interpreter.
  • Improve communication skills with Deaf and hard of hearing people.
  • Teach participants about the types of hearing loss and various communication methods.
  • Provide an insight into the Deaf community culture, language and history.
  • Explore situations

Intended outcomes:

  • Awareness of Deaf Culture.
  • Appropriate behaviour around Deaf people.
  • Correct use of language when referring to a Deaf person.
