Keep your data safe and secure!

New classification labels 630x380

Murdoch University has established an Information Classification Policy to support compliance with the State Government’s Privacy and Responsible Information Sharing Act 2024 (PRIS). As part of this policy, classification labels have been introduced to enhance data protection and ensure sensitive information is handled securely.

What are classification labels?

Classification labels allow us to classify and safeguard our data based on its sensitivity level. By applying these labels, we can ensure that our information across emails, documents and Microsoft products, like Word or PowerPoint, are handled with the appropriate level of security and confidentiality.

How to use classification labels

When you create a new document, email, or open an existing document, the system will apply ‘Official’ by default. If the document requires a different label, simply select the appropriate label from these options:

  • Unofficial: Information that is not related to official work.
  • Official: Information that, if compromised, would be expected to cause minor harm or damage to the University.
  • Confidential: Information that, if compromised, would be expected to cause significant harm or damage to the University.
  • Highly Confidential: Information that, if compromised, would be expected to cause severe harm or damage to the University.

Using these labels will automatically enforce the necessary protections, such as encryption or access restrictions, to keep our data secure.

Why This Matters for You?

  • Enhanced Security – Helps protect your personal and academic data
  • Compliance – Ensures data is handled responsibly under University policies
  • Easy to Use – The labels are user-friendly and integrate seamlessly with our existing tools and workflows
