Salt Waves Fresh is a free staged reading of William Shakespeare’s beloved comedy Twelfth Night, newly washed ashore on the Australian coast after a cyclone. It blends Shakespeare’s timeless tale of love, disguise, and mistaken identity with climate chaos, weaving together Jacobean theatre elements (live music, candlelight) and contemporary contexts.
Adapted by acclaimed eco-theatre practitioner Professor Gretchen Minton (Montana State University), this version reframes Shakespeare's classic through the lens of contemporary climate crisis. In this script-in-hand staged reading, Murdoch actors and musicians conjure tempests of both weather and emotion.
This reading offers audiences a unique opportunity to see how classic drama can illuminate urgent environmental issues while celebrating the power of performance to foster ecological awareness. It showcases the innovative work emerging from Murdoch University’s Theatre and Creative Production program, and is suitable for all audiences.
