Bushfires can develop rapidly. So, staying informed and ready is the best way to protect yourself and those around you. We recommend familiarising yourself with information on the Department of Fire and Emergency Services' (DFES) website, and installing the Emergency WA App and setting up alerts for the areas you frequent, for example work and home.
In preparation, Murdoch University has recently completed its annual fire breaks at all sites, reducing vegetation near buildings, and will continue our programme of open space mowing at the South St campus. Work is also underway to develop a framework to undertake controlled burning during 2026 to support both our bushfire preparedness and native ecosystem.
How you can help
As part of our preventive measures to minimise risk, access to our southern bushland reserves is restricted during bushfire season – typically from December to April each year and during extreme weather conditions.
“Please be mindful of the signage you may see on campus at these locations and follow the advice,” Selvan Pooshandrom, Emergency Response Coordinator said.
"We appreciate your support with this preventative measure.”
As a reminder, Murdoch University is a smoke-free campus and smoking is not permitted outside of the designated smoking zones. During hot weather, it is especially important that you adhere to this and do not smoke near any of the bushland areas.
The University community is encouraged to be bushfire safe by reporting any suspicious behaviour and contacting 000 and Campus Security Services on 9360 7333.
For further information about bushfire prevention and readiness, please refer to the resources on the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) website.
