National test of the AusAlert system – what you need to know

Published: 16th July 2026

On Monday, 27 July 2026, a nationwide test of Australia’s emergency alert system, AusAlert, will be conducted. The test alert will be sent to mobile devices across the country, including most phones, as well as some smart watches and tablets.

The test will take place at 12pm

For those based in Western Australia, the test will take place at 12pm (AWST).

During the test, compatible devices will emit a loud alert sound, even if they are set to silent or ’Do Not Disturb’. This is intentional and ensures the system can reach people during emergencies. However, for some individuals, this may cause distress or raise safety concerns. Please see below for further advice on how to prepare.

An example of the AusAlert mobile alert notification can be viewed on this webpage.

How to prepare if you have concerns

The AusAlert alert cannot be silenced through standard device settings. The only way to avoid receiving it is to turn your device off or switch it to aeroplane mode.

People experiencing domestic or family violence may need to take extra precautions. If you have a hidden or safety phone, consider planning ahead by placing it in a secure location or leaving it with a trusted person before the test.

If you are concerned about disruption, safety, or if sudden loud noises can trigger sensory concerns, PTSD, or any other unexpected responses, consider the following steps:

  • One hour before the test: Turn off your mobile device or switch it to aeroplane mode.
  • During and after the test: Keep your device off or in aeroplane mode for up to 24 hours.

Planning ahead can help reduce stress and support your safety and wellbeing. Preparation is an important to protect yourself and others.
