Exercise & Mood Research Study

If you experience low mood, are overweight or obese and aged 18-45, we invite you to participate in a study examining which types of exercise are most suitable for inclusion in therapy for depression.

If you experience low mood, are overweight or obese and aged 18-45, we invite you to participate in a study examining which types of exercise are most suitable for inclusion in therapy for depression.

It is common practice that exercise is prescribed to individuals experiencing symptoms of depression during the course of therapy. We are investigating which formats and types of exercise are most suitable (i.e. enjoyable, motivating) for inclusion in therapy.

 

 

We are recruiting individuals who are:

  • Currently experiencing low mood (e.g. lower than normal, or sustained low mood)
  • Overweight/obese
  • Aged 18-45yrs old

Complete inclusion/exclusion criteria apply and can be provided via e-mail/post. The study is not seen as suitable for individuals who have experienced recent suicide attempts (last two years).

Participants will be asked to:

  • Attend a structured interview and have their weight, height and body fat measured on two occasions
  • Attend supervised, individual exercise sessions at Murdoch University three times a week for six weeks
  • Fill out brief questionnaires regarding their mood, sleep quality, energy levels and experience of exercise every two to six weeks

This study has been approved by the Murdoch University Human Research Ethics Committee, Permit Number: 2013/204 and is registered with the Australian and New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry, ACTRN: 12614000097640.
