New Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) at Murdoch

Information on Murdoch's AEDs and the new St John Ambulance First Responder Program
In a medical emergency, the first few minutes are vital. To enhance safety and wellbeing on-campus, Murdoch has installed eight new alarmed and monitored Automatic External Defbrillators (AEDs) for treating someone in sudden cardiac arrest before paramedics arrive.
Defibrillation within five minutes of a heart attack significantly increases a person's chance of survival by 80 per cent. The AEDs are easy to use by anyone and have voice prompts to guide their operation.
To support a fast response in a medical emergency, Murdoch has also joined the St John Community First Responder Program. Through this program, all AED locations on Murdoch’s campuses are now registered with St John Ambulance so that anyone calling 000 (Triple Zero) can be advised of the nearest AED on-campus.
Also, as part of the Program, St John Ambulance will run a presentation on AEDs and the First Responder Program on Thursday 13 October from 11:00am - 12:30pm at the Kim E. Beazley Lecture Theatre (Building 351). The presentation will cover:
- Sudden Cardiac Arrest - what is it?
- Defibrillation explained
- The First Responder System and how it helps to save lives
- A practical demonstration on how to use an AED
Any students interested in learning about AEDs and the First Responder Program are strongly encouraged to come along.
The locations of all new and existing AEDs across South Street, Mandurah and Rockingham campuses are now loaded onto Murdoch's Online Campus Maps.
