Think shutting down your computer and lights for an hour doesn't make much difference? Think again!
Murdoch Uni has held its own version of Earth Hour, a global 'lights out' event to raise awareness of climate change, since 2010. This year we marked Earth Hour on 24 March between 12-1pm. For the first time, the PDCSO has tracked electricity consumption data from the week before and after Earth Hour- and the results are startling!
Between 12-1pm on the 24th we saw a 3% drop in electricity consumption. That may not sound like a lot, but if everyone took up the challenge to 'make every hour Earth Hour' we'd see a daily reduction of around 22% in electricity consumption- giving the University significant financial savings as well as real and measurable reductions in the our carbon footprint.
