2013 Sir Walter Murdoch Lecture presented by Dr Toby Miller Date: 27th August 2013 Time: 18:00 PM - 20:00 PM Location: South Street Campus Murdoch University's Vice Chancellor Professor Richard Higgott invites you to attend the 2013 Sir Walter Murdoch Lecture, Australian Citizenship, 1912 - A Model for the World? presented by Dr Toby Miller. Born in the United Kingdom, Miller earned a B.A. in history and political science at the Australian National University in 1980 and a Ph.D. in philosophy and communication studies at Murdoch University in 1991. He taught at Murdoch before becoming a professor at New York University from 1993 to 2004 and is now Distinguished Professor at the University of California, Riverside. Toby is the author and editor of over 30 books, has published essays in more than 100 journals and edited collections, and is a frequent guest commentator on television and radio programs. His teaching and research cover the media, sports, labor, gender, race, citizenship, politics, and cultural policy, as well as the success of Hollywood overseas and the adverse effects of electronic waste. Miller's work has been translated into Chinese, Japanese, Swedish, German, Turkish, Spanish and Portuguese. His recent books include Cultural Citizenship (2007), Makeover Nation (2008), Greening the Media (2012), and Blow up the Humanities (2012). You can follow his adventures at tobymiller.org This year's lecture will draw on Walter Murdoch's book Australian Citizenship, published in 1912 and the talk will focus on the three principal forms of citizenship (political, economic, and cultural) and ask how well they work today and whether Sir Walter's little book from a century ago offers a way forward for dealing with economic and environmental crises.
