Published: 19th August 2019

Murdoch's first Parents' Room is now open to staff and students, where you and your children can play and study together in an enclosed environment.

The Parents' Room is located in The Base (room 430.1.007, under the Student Hub) and includes a sink, microwave, secure boiling water tap, fridge, power points and a small selection of shared toys and books. There is also a separate private space for feeding.

The Parents’ Room currently has four workstations for hot-desk BYOD usage, with plans for additional networked workstations to be installed in the near future. Baby change tables and nappy disposal units are available in nearby male and female toilets.  Access is available to all staff and students using your ID card.

The Parents' Room is a key initiative as part of Murdoch's recent application for Bronze Athena SWAN accreditation, which provided a comprehensive picture of gender equity and diversity at the University and a staff-led action plan to improve gender equity and diversity. Although results are not due until later this year, Murdoch has already committed to and started implementing the action plan to make a strong start. Plans are underway for a second Parents’ Room to be centrally located in the near future, with a longer term crèche project in the pipeline.

Additionally, under the Students of Change (SCALT) initiative, Murdoch student PuiMun Lee has created a new Murdoch Parents Network. All student parents are encouraged to join in and share this information with other student parents who have young children.
