November 20th marks Trans Day of Remembrance, a day to remember the transgender and gender diverse people who have lost their lives to violence.

TDOR-20194

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honour the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. Each year a vigil is held to commemorate all the transgender and gender diverse people lost to violence since Rita Hester's death. Transgender and gender diverse people experience physical assault or threat of physical assault at a rate of 25%, 12 times the rate of the general population.

Trans* and gender diverse people, their friends, family, and allies are invited to a candlelight vigil on the evening of Transgender Day of Remembrance hosted by Transfolk of WA.

In recognition of Transgender Day of Remembrance, the Trans* flag will be raised in place of the rainbow Pride flag on Nov 20.
