COVID-19: Managing stress and anxiety

Published: 25th March 2020

With the outbreak of COVID-19 it’s natural to feel stressed and overwhelmed. Fear and anxiety are normal responses to this global pandemic that has created uncertainty and unease.

If you can stay as calm as possible in these circumstances, you are going to be more helpful to others and be able to maintain your own mental health.

Here are some things you can do to reduce your stress.

Learn the facts

It is easy to get caught up in the panic. Constant media coverage and updates can keep us in a heightened state of anxiety. Try to limit media exposure. Learn the facts from reliable sources such as the Australian Department of Health, or the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Try not to focus on the ‘what ifs’ – concentrate on things you can reasonably control.

Take reasonable precautions

We often find comfort in knowing we are doing something rather than sitting around feeling helpless. So, follow the protective measures WHO recommends:

  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Stay at home if you begin to feel unwell and stay there until you fully recover.
  • Seek medical care early if you have a fever, cough or experience breathing difficulties.

Look after yourself

It is important to look after yourself. Find what works for you. Physical distancing recommendations might mean you have to get creative!

  • Phone or video call your friends and family to maintain good social connections.
  • Walk, read, cook. Anything that doesn’t involve crowds!
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle by eating well, exercising regularly (you might need to get creative adapting your usual workout) and getting quality sleep.
  • Relaxation, meditation or mindfulness may help you wind down.
