Announcement on 3 April 2020

To prioritise the health and wellbeing of our community in response to COVID-19, a decision has been made to close the libraries at our Perth and Mandurah campuses.

Around Australia, university libraries have been closing due to an inability to police physical distancing coupled with low attendance. At Murdoch, we have been experiencing the same issues with the loan of print items, even from our high demand collection, reducing significantly.

Following careful consideration by the University, it has been agreed to close our libraries but maintain access by swipe card to a 24/7 space open for computer access.

This decision applies to both our Perth and Mandurah campuses. On the Perth campus, the Geoffrey Bolton Library and Vet Library will close from Sunday 5 April at 5pm.

The library at our Mandurah campus will close from 4pm on Friday 3 April.
To facilitate the uptake of online resources as an alternative to print material, we have also been doing the following:

  • Working with unit coordinators to identify suitable electronic books to replace print materials on reading lists. Publishers extending access to their e-texts and resources has helped in providing more choice.
  • Planning to introduce a request service to provide individuals with scans of print articles and book chapters in our collection. Our copyright co-ordinator is producing guidelines for academics, based on recent advice from the legal team at Universities Australia, of what is allowable under the special circumstances provision of the copyright act. We will continue to put chapters for units on My Unit Readings lists.
  • Joined another inter-lending network for six months to increase access to electronic articles and book chapters from other libraries.

During this time, access to the library’s extensive electronic collection will continue to be available 24/7. More information on the library’s services during COVID-19 can be found online.

If you need to get in contact with the University Library team, you can also contact them through Murdoch Support.
