Instead of face-to face exams, an online final assessment period (online exams) will take place Saturday 6 June to Saturday 20 June through myMurdoch Learning (LMS). Please note that the previous study week was moved forward so there will be no scheduled break between the final teaching week and the start of the final assessment period.

The final assessment timetable will be available on Friday 8 May. On the timetable you’ll receive details for each of your units, including the type of final assessment and the time your final assessment will take place.

Three types of timed final tasks or exams

There are three types of assessment tasks running during the final assessment period.

We understand that the final assessment period is going to differ greatly from the usual on-campus exams, and we recognise that your online study conditions will differ greatly. The final assessment period has been designed to recognise these changed conditions.

These three final assessment types have been created to ensure maximum flexibility to help you demonstrate your learning outcomes.

Your Unit Coordinators has decided which assessment type is most appropriate for each unit. You’ll be notified of the type of assessment task for each unit on final assessment timetable, along with the date, time and any other important information. It is possible that you will have two tasks for a single unit.

Type 1: Open task

  • With an ‘open task’, the assessment will be made available to you 48 hours or more before it is due. You have the entire time period to complete the assessment. For example, you may start the assessment, leave the assessment and then return to complete/submit several hours later.
  • The assessment is open book and you will be required to submit the final assessment through the LMS Assignment Tool at any point within the given time period
  • Please view the online exam timetable to confirm the allocated time period for the open task. There is a task submission date and time in the timetable. Give yourself plenty of time to upload the task.
  • Please note a 48-hour open task may include one weekend day but will not be scheduled for Saturday and Sunday only.

Type 2: Flexible exam

  • ‘Flexible exams’ are timed (1-3 hours), but you can commence the timed exam at any point within a given 23-hour window.
  • Once you have begun the exam, you must complete it within the allocated amount of time (1-3 hours). The exam time will vary based on your unit requirements, however each exam will now include an extra 15 minutes per hour. For example, a 2-hour exam will be allowed an extra 30 minutes. This is to account for the different conditions of this exam.
  • The time window will start at 7am on a given day and ends at 6am the next day. Choose a time to start that will allow you the best chance of success. Make sure you have enough time to complete the task; for example a 3 hour task should be started at least 3 hours and 45 minutes before 6am. Please view the online exam timetable to find out when the 23-hour window is being held and the amount of time you will have for completion of the task.
  • This exam will take place using the LMS Quiz tool or the LMS assignment tool and will be completed under open book conditions.

Type 3: Timed exam

  • ‘Timed exams’ begin at a specific time and day and must be completed within the give 1-3 hour time window.
  • Please view the online exam timetable to determine when the exam will commence, and the amount of time you will have for completion.
  • Exam time will vary based on your unit requirements, however each exam will now include an extra 15 minutes per hour (e.g. 1-hour exam will have an extra 15 mins and a 2-hour exam will be allowed an extra 30 minutes). . This is to account for the different conditions of this exam.
  • Timed exams will take place using the LMS Quiz tool or the LMS Assignment tool and will be completed under open book conditions.

What about units with practical components?

For some units with practical components that cannot be replicated in an online environment, final assessments may have been postponed until later in the year. Unit Coordinators will advise you if this is the case. Considerations are being made to ensure this does not affect your future studies or course completion.

Academic integrity

Academic integrity is critical during your final assessments, as it is at all times.

Don’t forget to complete the Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which provides important information to ensure you are completing your final assessments with honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility.

Please note Unit Coordinators will be using Urkund to ensure academic integrity standards are upheld during final assessments.

Help and support

If you have concerns regarding completion of your final assessments, please contact your Unit Coordinators as early as possible.

For all other queries, include support for preparation and study, please contact myMurdoch Advice by email at advice@murdoch.edu.au.

General information and guidance for students about preparing for and undertaking online exams will be made available on the Learning from Home page in coming weeks.
