We live in a world of constant surveillance. Lost in our mobile devices, living life no longer seems to be enough; we have an ineluctable need to record … and share it! From Facebook to reality TV, from millions baring their lives through blogs to the inexhaustible stream of Twitter, modern society’s insatiable appetite for personal exposure has reached frenzied levels.

Welcome to the brave new world of Jean Paul Sartre’s NO EXIT, whether we feel “smiley face” about it or not.

NO EXIT, written in 1944 (originally titled Huis Clos) by writer and philosopher Jean Paul Sartre, is as relevant today as when it was written. Three deeply flawed characters find themselves damned together in a hell that is inexplicably located in a conventional living room. As they tease and verbally torture each other they expose the emotional alienation that occurs when we define ourselves by the gaze of the other. With nowhere to go and no way to escape, each character struggles to control the others opinion of themselves.

This production, with the use of multiple casts, locates Sartre’s existential ideas in our current world, amongst the constant live streaming of shared existences.

Other people’s lives have become a source for our entertainment; they are openly shared online for our amusement. Sartre’s now famous phrase, hell is other people, has never seemed so in-your-face as it is today.

No Exit will run from Monday October 28 until Saturday 2nd November 2013 in Nexus Theatre

Show starts at 7:00pm
