Announcement: Learning and teaching in 2021

Published: 9th October 2020

This year there have been many changes to the way we deliver teaching and learning at Murdoch.

In planning for next year, we’ve listened to your feedback about online learning and reflected on leading educational research about how best to support your learning.

What we’ve learned:

  • From your feedback, we've learned that many of you enjoy having the flexibility to engage with the subject material or tune into lectures at a time and date of your choosing, but prefer to participate in interactive classes such as tutorials and labs face-to-face.
  • Educational research also tells us that interaction and collaboration with peers and teachers in smaller ratio classes has the biggest impact on your learning.

Based on these findings, we’re excited to announce that the way we deliver lecture content will continue to evolve next year. This means there will be a range of flexible and contemporary ways you can engage in lecture content.

Many of our units, particularly in Nursing, Business and Education, have already replaced lectures with other activities. All remaining units and courses will continue this transition in 2021, with some variations by discipline of study that will be communicated as decisions are made.

Depending on the discipline and unit, this may involve mini-lecture recordings, curated online content with online activities, or an integrated approach where lecture content is blended with other class activities in meaningful ways.

Your other classes such as tutorials, workshops and labs will continue to run on campus. For those of you who cannot attend campus, or who choose not to, online class options will be available in most cases, except where the learning and assessment experiences cannot be replicated in an online environment.

Your health and safety is our main priority. This means on-campus classes will continue to follow COVID-19 distancing and hygiene requirements for as long as required.

How to view your on-campus and online class options:

Firstly, we encourage you to use the new and improved Handbook to inform your unit choices for 2021 and prepare for unit enrolment opening in the coming weeks.

The Semester 1, 2021 teaching timetable is now available, allowing you to explore the on-campus and online class options for each of your units, ahead of class sign up opening mid-January 2021.

Please note, when you sign up to an online or on-campus class you are committing to attending the class in that mode for the whole semester, and you can’t switch week-to-week.

There will be a range of other activities you need to complete in your own time to prepare for your timetabled classes. Your Unit Coordinator will provide details on these specific requirements through the unit guide and LMS as the semester approaches.

If you have questions about your unit enrolment or study options for 2021, please contact myMurdoch Advice for support at advice@murdoch.edu.au.

We are excited about these changes that allow us to offer you our world-class teaching and learning in a contemporary, flexible and engaging way.
