May 17 is IDAHOBIT!

Published: 14th May 2021

IDAHOBIT - The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism & Transphobia.

Rainbow_Flag 300x420

At Murdoch we proudly support LGBTIQA+ inclusion and fly the Pride flag outside the South Street campus main entrance as a visible display of our commitment to building an affirming and welcoming community.

May 17 marks the day in 1990 when the World Health Organisation (WHO) officially declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder. Transgender identities were declassified in 2019 by WHO. IDAHHOBIT is a significant day that remembers stigmas which created barriers to healthcare and bodily integrity, recognises there are ongoing challenges and discrimination. It is also a day to celebrate the courage and resilience of LGBTIQA+ people.

Murdoch’s Ally Network is a visible network of advocates for the LGBTIQA+ community and available to all students. To become an Ally, staff complete the Ally program training and choose to become a part of the network that contributes to building an affirming and welcoming community at Murdoch University.

Allies can be found via the Ally Network list, their rainbow Ally lanyard or Ally desk sticker.

To mark IDAHOBIT the Murdoch community is encouraged to incorporate a bit of the rainbow into your day: wear your Ally lanyard, some colourful socks, your Murdoch Pride shirt if you have one.

Remember to check in with family, friends and colleagues and take a moment to think on the significance for many that this day marks.
