Raid your wardrobe and makeup drawer for all things purple for Wear It Purple Day, a salute to our incredible LGBTIQA+ community. This Friday (27 August), we want to see purple nail polish, friendship bracelets, pants, shirts and even hair!

The day is focused on supporting LGBTIQA+ young people, who experience disproportionately high mental health and suicide rates. However, wearing purple shows solidarity to LGBTIQA+ people of all ages. It reminds us that we are not alone and that there are people who are willing to stand with us against discrimination and bullying on the basis of our sex, sexuality or gender identities.

Why should I get involved?

Wear it Purple is an important day in our calendars. It showcases to rainbow young people that they have the right to be who they are and that they are welcome at Murdoch. This year’s theme focuses on the necessary conversations about sexual orientation and gender identity and is a reminder to not only start the conversation – but to keep them going. By wearing purple this Friday, you will be part of a movement that has the potential to save thousands of lives.

Where can I access day-to-day resources?

This day has been designed to foster awareness, encourage meaningful opportunities, provide a supportive and safe space, and unite with other organisations to further inclusion initiatives. Most importantly, Wear It Purple is a day of conversation that shouldn’t end there.

Murdoch University is committed to ensuring a safe space for our LGBTIQA+ community. There are plenty of resources and ways to get involved, find help, or offer support, including:

Join us this year on this Friday 27 August to have fun, get involved and showcase that you’re an ally, helping to provide a safe and caring environment inclusive for everyone. Be part of this change!
