Respectful relationships

Published: 27th August 2021

Everyone has a right to good sexual health and easy access to information and support.

Respectful relationships 300x420

One way to maintain your sexual health is with a free STI check at the Murdoch University Medical Service. Making an appointment is easy and can be done online.

You also have the right to respect and safety in all your relationships. This means relationship behaviour that is abusive is never okay.

Many relationships go through ups and downs. Having disagreements and feeling unhappy are things we all face at different stages, but abuse is a repeating pattern of behaviour that makes you feel unsafe.

A relationship may be unhealthy if the other person tries to control you, pressures you, deliberately hurts you, threatens you or expresses extreme jealousy.

Having a healthy relationship is important.

It gives you the freedom to talk openly, make decisions about your body, see friends and family, have your own hobbies and make your own financial decisions. In a healthy relationship, you are not scared to be honest about how you feel, you feel safe and respected, and you can say no to sex.
