Making Industry - University Partnerships work

Date: 11th February 2014
Time: 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM

Location: Murdoch Senate at South Street Campus

Following an introduction by Professor David Morrison, this will be a great opportunity to come and listen to three researchers from Murdoch University who have worked with companies to get their ideas to the market.

Professors Steve Wilton and Sue Fletcher:  Both have worked as a team and have recently been awarded the prestigious Australian Museum Eureka Prize and are 2012 WA Innovators of the year. Prof Wilton and Fletcher have developed a breakthrough therapy for children living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).  DMD results in progressive degeneration of muscle.  This means that DMD patients who are mainly boys are wheelchair dependent by the age of 12 and may not live beyond their mid-20s.  This new therapy will give promise and hope to DMD patients and is now at very advanced stages of testing in clinical trials.  This journey from bench top to clinic has involved many collaborations and people working together.  Prof Wilton & Fletcher have worked closely with an industry partner for over 6 years and will share their experiences of the journey so far.

Dr Ralf Cord -Ruwisch:  Dr Cord-Ruwisch has been working in the field of applied and environmental microbiology for more than 20 years.  His research work has resulted in development of novel processes “engineered around the biology” which he has published and patented.   He has collaborated with industry partners locally, nationally and internationally.  Dr Cord-Ruwisch will share his story of one of his research interests which has resulted in the development of a novel wastewater treatment process.  Dr Cord-Ruwisch will take us through the journey of experimenting, patenting, industry liaison, commercialising, leading to the design, construction and trialling of a full-scale plant by the commercial partner company.
