Public Interest Disclosure Policy

posted 16 June 2015 | Staff Announcement - (staff)

The Public Interest Disclosure (PID) Act 2003 provides protection to individuals who come forward with information about wrong-doing without their identity being revealed or fear of reprisal.

Murdoch’s Public Interest Disclosure Policy ensures the University meets its commitments and provides a framework for making disclosures under the Act, the investigation of such disclosures, and the protection of disclosures from reprisals.

Information in relation to the University's Policy on Public Interest Disclosures - also known as "whistle-blowing" - can be found at: https://policy.murdoch.edu.au/docview/?docid=1299&public=true

You may make any disclosure under the policy to a Murdoch University PID Officer, or other “proper authorities” as detailed in the policy. The University has two Public Interest Disclosure Officers:

  • Interim Director, People and Culture, Bob Farrelly; and,
  • Director, Internal Audit and Risk Management, Kerrynne Batten.

Anyone, including staff and students, can make a disclosure, and a disclosure can be made anonymously. However, the discloser must believe the information is, or may be true; and the discloser must make the disclosure consciously and voluntarily under the Act.

If you would like more information on what is Public Interest Disclosure, the Public Sector Commission WA has a publication on this, which can be found at http://www.publicsector.wa.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/whatisapid.pdf (*Please note that Bob Farrelly will be added as a PID Officer at the next tabling of the policy at Senate*)

There is also a digital media file, "Speaking Out: A guide to making a Public Interest Disclosure" available at http://www.publicsector.wa.gov.au/document/speaking-out-guide-making-public-interest-disclosure

The PID policy is an important part of maintaining confidence in the integrity of our University.

Please contact the Director, Internal Audit & Risk Management on 08 9360 6167 or k.batten@murdoch.edu.au, or the Interim Director, People and Culture on 08 9360 2131 on b.farrelly@murdoch.edu.au if you require any further information.
