Venue name changes
posted 31 October 2016 | Staff Announcement (staff)
Building names are changing to numbers from 28th November 2016
The way we refer to buildings on campus is changing. In order to continue implementing the University’s Wayfinding Strategy (first approved in 2012) our corporate systems will be updated to reflect building signage. This will be evident in the University timetable and web room booker, and other corporate systems, such as Callista, will follow.
The references to teaching locations in the 2017 timetabling database have changed to reflect building numbers, rather than the building name.
Building numbers are allocated in accordance with its location on campus. Buildings in the same campus zone have the same first number. For example, some buildings in zone 3 are Chancellery # 330, Environmental Sciences # 335, Nexus # 351, Library North # 350 and IIID # 390.
Abbreviated building names (e.g. LL, PS) will no longer be used . The new naming convention consists of a 3 digit building number, a 1 digit floor number, then a 3 or 4 digit room number. For example AMEN2.021 will now read as 490.2.021.
This change will improve the student experience as the references used in our building signage, timetable location information, campus maps and the soon to be launched wayfinder will be aligned.
In order to minimise any confusion this change might cause to existing staff and students, the online timetable has been adjusted to show a location reference and a description field which will show the building name. Wherever possible, systems will show both building number and the existing building name. The online timetable can be viewed in a calendar view or a list view, and the description field showing the building name has been added to either view. In response to student feedback, we’ve chosen to display the building name in full, rather than using an abbreviation.
The student timetable was released on October 31, and this will be the first time this change will be apparent.
The University is working with frontline staff to ensure they understand the new conventions and that they have access to campus maps which illustrate building locations.
