Battery and Polystyrene Recycling on Campus
posted 20 June 2017 | Staff Announcement (staff)
Keep batteries out of our waste and recycling bins by placing these items in our dedicated battery recycling bins. Polystyrene (styrofoam) is now recycled through our ordinary recycling system, so be sure to place it in the yellow topped recycling bin.
Recycling batteries captures the metals and chemicals within them and reduces the demand for mining these non-renewable resources. Recycling them also keeps their toxic chemicals out of landfill.
Place any dry cell batteries in our special battery recycling bins; you can bring them from home too. There's probably a battery recycling bin near you:

Small quantities of Extruded Polystyrene (EPS, also known as Styrofoam) is now recycled through our conventional recycling system.
However, if your School or Office regularly generates a lot of EPS, please contact the FM Helpdesk (ex 2262) to arrange for a dedicated EPS recycling collection bag.
Since this special recycling stream commenced in May 2017 we have diverted approximately 8 cubic meters of EPS to a dedicated EPS recycler. This ensures maximum recovery of this very energy-intensive resource, which can be endlessly recycled into EPS products.
For further information, please contact Sustainability Manager, Leah Knapp (ex 6361).
