Career Learning Spine – Information for Staff

The Career Learning Spine is a new curriculum initiative that will provide students with tailored learning experiences and development opportunities that will increase students’ career capabilities.

As undergraduate courses undertake review they will be designed to have 9 credit points of Career Learning experiences offered in the ‘Murdoch Spine’ component of their course structure. These experiences will be embedded into professionally accredited courses or offered through a series of tailored, self-paced learning options to suit each students study and career aspirations (as outlined below). Students from courses that have yet to embed the Murdoch Spine are able to take MSP200 or MSP 201 as breadth units or general electives.

 

To determine what units are available or required within the Murdoch Spine students should be advised to refer to their course structure in the handbook.

 

Staff are invited to attend an information session that will explain and showcase some of the learning experiences offered within the Career Learning Spine. This session is recommended for academic staff or staff advising students.

Information is provided below on each of the centrally delivered learning experiences:

 

MSP100 Career Learning: Managing Your Career

3 credit points

This unit allows students to clarify their career aspirations and supports them in planning the development of skills they will need for future career success. Through the unit, students will engage with professionals in an area of interest, undertake self-assessment activities, and learn to use tools which will help them to showcase their capabilities in a Career Learning e-Portfolio.

 

The unit is made up of four distinct modules:

  • Planning Your Future Career (1 credit point),
  • Explore Your Career – where students experience a day on the job (1 credit point),
  • Managing Your Digital Footprint (0.5 credit point),
  • Building Your Networks (0.5 credit point).

Each module can be completed at any time during the enrolment period and then submitted to meet the requirements of the unit.

 

MSP200 Career Learning: Developing Skills

3 credit points

This unit requires students to complete 6 Career Learning Mini-Modules (0.5 credit point each). The modules offer students a flexible opportunity to build a portfolio of career capabilities. Each module progresses towards an interactive assessment and goal-setting activity, resulting in a final portfolio showcasing their skill development and accompanying career development plan.

Career Skills Mini-Modules can be completed at any time during the enrolment period and then submitted to meet the requirements of the unit. New Mini-Modules will become available over time for students to choose from.

 

MSP201 Real-World Learning

3 credit points

This unit provides an opportunity for students to develop transferable career skills and increase their professional network through a real-world learning experience over a minimum of 40 hours. Real-world learning activities do not have to be related to the student’s chosen discipline and include; volunteering (sourced by the student), participation in a structured student program or student competition. Learning is facilitated through: a pre-experience preparation module; reflective journaling during; evidencing skill development and action planning for future careers.
