Free film and seminar: "An ethnographic excursion into the life of an ethnographer"

Date: 26th July 2013
Time: 14:00 PM - 16:00 PM

Location: South Street Campus: Education & Humanities 3.041

Dr Annekie Joubert from Humboldt University, Berlin will present a film and seminar on the processes of her project concerning the life and work of German missionary in South Africa, Carl Hoffman. She will discuss a range of issues including the archiving of Hoffman's personal diaries, photos and art works and preservation of visual data as a permanent scientific resource.

Dr Joubert invites discussion about issues such as: visual systems as an integral part of research; advantages of visual recordings; visual representation as a research tool; ethics and the use of visual data after fieldwork; protective policies when using visual documentation; production of identity and the protection and ownership of intellectual property rights; re-defining the dynamic changes of visual data in an age of globalisation and new technology; and the contestation of ethnographic filmmaking as the so-called "baby-sitting device for busy teachers".
