We are asking Murdoch University staff to participate in a research project that will help to improve the level of knowledge and awareness of our society using digital signage. Some of the bins in Bush Court and surrounding buildings are going to be smart on Thursday 21st Feb 2019 (see attached figure). They will have environmental sensors and wireless access points. The bins will be used to offer pedestrians information about events in the area that may be of interest, as well as safety regulations and evacuation plans.
Based on wireless signal requests of your wireless-enabled devices such as smartphone, tablet, laptop, etc., the wireless access points will receive wireless signals strength and unique identifiers (MAC addresses) from them. Based on these, our system will be able to measure the number of people in an area and predict their level of interest in digital signage by the time they spend reading it.
We want to emphasize that no personal information is gathered, as the phone’s MAC address gives no indication of who the owner of the device is, nor any access to the owner’s activity on the device.
Gathering anonymised crowd data using WiFi probe requests sent from mobile devices is the same as what currently occurs in shopping centres.
If you don’t want to participate in the system, the simplest action you can take is to temporarily disable your device’s Wifi while you are within the area on business days between 10am to 4pm.
Another way of stating that you do not want to participate is to submit your device’s MAC address using the following URL https://recsys.ystop.com.au/withdrawal_form.html . For any inquiry, please send an email to mohamedatifnassar.ali@murdoch.edu.au with the subject “Smart Bins Project”.
