16 Days in WA

Published: 5th November 2019

The annual 16 Days in WA – Stop Violence Against Women campaign will take place from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, to 10 December, which is Human Rights Day.

We all have a role to play in speaking out to stop violence against women – together, we can make a difference.

Based on the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, 16 Days in WA is Western Australia’s contribution to these efforts and aims to raise awareness, motivate positive actions across Western Australia and advocate on behalf of organisations that oppose violence against women.

Check out the 16 Days in WA recommended reading list, curated by Virginia Seymour. Some of the books will be displayed in the Geoffrey Bolton Library for the 16 days.

As part of the 16 days in WA campaign, we are encouraging staff and students to donate to Share the Dignity Christmas collection #itsinthebag.

#itsinthebag will run from Friday November 22 to Saturday December 7.

About Share the Dignity:

Ensuring everyone is afforded the dignity so many of us take for granted. Our work directly benefits women in crisis. Every. Single. Day.

Donate to a women’s charity that makes a real, on-the-ground difference for girls and women experiencing homelessness, domestic violence and period poverty.

#itsinthebag:

You have the power to make life better for a woman or girl experiencing homelessness or poverty this Christmas. Provide pads and tampons, personal hygiene products and everyday luxuries to homeless women, women at risk or women experiencing domestic violence.

It’s simple. First of all, choose a handbag in good condition that you no longer use.  Then, fill it with items that would make a woman feel special, pop in a thoughtful note or Christmas card and show her someone cares. Show her that she matters because everyone deserves to feel that way.

Next time you’re at the shops, collect a few items for your Christmas handbag. No matter how you celebrate Christmas with your family, this will be the most meaningful and appreciated gift you give this year.

Donations can be made at the Geoffrey Bolton Library, at the Chancellery Building or the Counselling Service.
